Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for Cold Springs Killing

Suspect Robert Owens has been sentenced for the killing of Lacee Shupe. He is ordered to serve life without parole for first-degree murder, 53-240 months for attempted murder, and 24-180 months for battery with a deadly weapon.


RENO, NV - Washoe County Sheriff’s detectives have made an arrest in a Cold Springs homicide investigation.

Detectives arrested Robert Michael Owens Jr. of Cold Springs Tuesday afternoon, July 16, for the murder of Lacee Nicole Shupe and the attempted murder of 39-year-old Joshua Able, also of Cold Springs.

Owens is currently in custody at the Washoe County jail.

The morning of July 1, 2013, deputies responded to a report of suspicious circumstances in the 17100 block of Crystal Canyon Court. Preliminary investigation showed the incident involved three roommates, with one attacking the other two, then hurting himself.

All three were taken to a hospital, where Shupe died. The initial cause of death is believed to be sharp force trauma, but a final determination is pending from the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Owens was arrested after being released from the hospital. Able, the second victim, is recovering.
