SPARKS, NV – The city of Sparks has released the name of the 12-year-old boy who shot and killed a teacher and shot two fellow students at Sparks Middle School Monday before killing himself.

Early Thursday, during an interview covering the legality of withholding the name of the shooter, the Sparks city attorney acknowledged the existence of an on-line news story by the Univision TV network.

According to a city news release, the city attorney’s acknowledgement of the Univision news story was misinterpreted as an acknowledgment that the name of the Sparks Middle School shooter mentioned in Univision’s report was correct.

Due to the widespread release of the Univision news story, and in order to be fair to the families involved and all news media, the city of Sparks confirms that the name of the Sparks Middle School shooter is Jose Reyes.

That name had been widely circulated via various sources, including social media, but KOLO 8 News Now was waiting until it was released by an official source. The city had been saying it was respecting the privacy request of the family.
