Local Non-Profit Saves Christmas

RENO, Nev. -- For some families this year who are just making ends meet, Christmas is not an option. Thanks to a local non profit, the holiday, has been saved! The Olsen family is just one of the lucky families the Save Protect Foundation is helping this year. It helps about 40 families each month, giving them a chance to get back on their feet and giving the Olsens a holiday to remember.

For the past couple of months, Marine Corps veteran, John Olsen and his family have just been getting by.

"Towards the end of the month we are really struggling," he said. "We have to go down to St. Vincent's and get the monthly food stuff."

The family of five live in a one bedroom apartment and they all sleep in the living room.

"Not having a car and taking the bus every day and picking up my son, it's just a struggle every day," said Rose Olsen, John's wife.

Rose can't work because of a disability and John lost his job at the end of September, right before the holiday season.

"It's just hard trying to raise my kids the right way and make sure that we have a roof over our heads," he said.

Living on a fixed income with three young children makes meeting ends meet, let alone celebrating Christmas, nearly impossible.

One of Santa's helpers heard the Olsens' pleas and came to the rescue. Johnny Larkins of the SAVE Protect Foundation vows that no child should go without Christmas.

"We want people to know that they're special, they're important," Larkins said. "Giving a kid a choice between a toy and food, I think is think is unfair."

The non-profit is helping 300 families this holiday season, delivering Christmas trees, a month's worth of food and even presents.

"Let them have what we have. Let's end the year with hope and show them we care," he added.

John, Rose and the kids can finally have the Christmas they've been wishing for.

John is preparing for a job interview at Home Depot set in the next couple of days. If you would like to help families like the Olsens, contact Johnny or Lisa Larkins of the SAVE Protect Foundation at (775) 881-8207
