Reno blanks RGV to move closer to playoff berth

RENO, Nev. – Reno 1868 FC bounced back from draw to Las Vegas Lights FC in a big way Wednesday as the club crushed Rio Grande Valley FC 4-0.

In front of 5,094 fans at Greater Nevada Field, Reno (13-7-10, 49 points) captured a huge win as the club inched closer to clinching a playoff spot. With Wednesday night’s big win, the club is now four points away from a trip to the USL Cup Playoffs for the second year in a row.

Wednesday night was all Reno.

Midfielder Seth Casiple opened up scoring early in the 12th minute off a beautiful cross from defender Duke Lacroix. The goal was Casiple’s third of the season.

Lacroix wasn’t done setting up teammates as the speedy left-back found Chris Wehan 10 minutes later in the 22nd minute. Wehan’s goal was his fifth of the season and 13th as a Reno 1868 FC player.

Reno entered halftime up 2-0 following a first half full of chances.

Despite a recharged Toros squad early in the second half, it was all 1868 FC for the rest of the match. Reno primarily played a defensive game before opening up a chance for standout forward Brian Brown.

Brown took a pass from Wehan in the 80th minute, fired a powerful shot that went off the hands of RGVFC goalkeeper Nicolas Corti and into the back of the net. The goal was Brown’s 15th of the season and 18th career goal in a Reno 1868 FC kit.

His 18 goals are now tied with fellow Jamaican forward and Reno legend Dane Kelly for most all-time.

Forward Mo Thiaw, who came on for Brown, put the cherry on top for Reno in the 89th minute following a find by Brent Richards to seal the score at 4-0.

Saturday’s match against Tulsa Roughnecks FC at home will be a huge match for Reno. Should Reno win that match and San Antonio FC loses to Seattle Sounders 2, the club will clinch a playoff spot.

Kickoff for that match is set for 6:45 p.m. and tickets can be purchased at both the Greater Nevada Field ticket office and Reno1868FC.com. The first 1,868 fans Saturday will get a free pair of soccer socks courtesy of Reno Orthopedic Clinic.
