Nevada volleyball's Afoa named Mountain West Defensive Player of Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO (KOLO) – Helping lead the Nevada volleyball team to three wins in the Les Schwab Rose City Showdown, junior outside hitter Kayla Afoa has been named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week. This is her second Mountain West honor in her career and first defensive honor; was named Offensive Player of the Week in 2018.

Afoa put together a fantastic performance over the weekend. Recording double-doubles in each of the matches against CSUN and Portland State for her fifth and sixth on the year. The Honolulu native put up 15 digs in each of the first two contests along with 14 against Morgan State for 44 total digs in 10 sets for an average of 4.40 per set.

Currently, Afoa sits in second on the team in digs with 127 while ranking sixth in conference. Nevada as a squad ranks first in digs in the Mountain West with 580, with UNLV in second with 531.

The Pack is 7-2 on the season and looking to carry that momentum into a home tournament this weekend, the Nevada Invitational. The tournament is Sept. 20-21 with the first match beginning at 10 am PT between California Baptist and Gonzaga.
