MISSOULA, Mont. - The Nevada softball team fell to the Montana Grizzlies in the second game of the three game series, 6-5, after a walk off double from the Griz ended the game in the bottom of the seventh.
Kendall Fritz got the start and pitched 6 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts. The freshman moves to 5-4 and has 79 strikeouts on the year; that leads the team as well as the Mountain West.
Kenzi Goins, Sierra Mello, Sadaria McAlister and Kwynn Warner all tallied multi-hit games and extended their on-base streak.
Junior Goins got things started in the top of the first inning with a two-run home run over the scoreboard in left center field. The Reno native scored best friend and fellow Reno native, Sadaria McAlister to put the Pack up 2-0.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Griz responded with a two-run home run of its own and added two more off an RBI double to take the lead 4-2. However, Nevada put up one run in each of the third, fourth and fifth inning to regain the lead, 5-4.
In the third inning, Sierra Mello singled before McAlister reached on a fielder's choice and Goins singled to put two on with one out. Dallas Millwood was hit by a pitch to load the bases up when Kwynn Warner singled to the shortstop scoring McAlister for the lone run of the inning.
Haley Burda started the fourth inning with a triple to right field and a fielding error on the Griz first baseman let Mello land at first while Burda came home, tying the game up, 4-4.
Alyssa Mendez had the go ahead RBI on a sac fly in the fifth inning that scored Goins from third after she reached on her third hit of the day letting the Pack go up, 5-4. The Griz had the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth but a pop up to McAlister in shallow center field kept the offense at bay.
Nevada had base runners in the sixth and seventh but had back-to-back fielder's choices to end the threat. However, the Pack lead was overcome from the Montana offense after an RBI double ended the game.
Tomorrow wraps up the three-game series against the Grizzlies. The two match-up at noon PT with live stream and live stats will be available.
