Hammond earns conference honors after career day against SDSU

RENO, Nev. – Junior defensive end Sam Hammond has been named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week following Nevada’s 17-13 victory at No. 24 San Diego State on Saturday night. This was Nevada’s first-ever road win against a ranked team and the first ranked victory since the Miracle at Mackay against Boise State in 2010.

Hammond is the first Nevada player to earn defensive player of the week honors from the conference this season, while teammate Brandon Talton has been named the MW Special Teams Player of the Week on three occasions.

The Yerington, Nev. native had a career-high nine tackles, including setting a new personal best at the half with six. His nine tackles tied for the most on the team and he also tallied one sack. Four of his tackles were solo.

With Hammond leading the way, No. 24 SDSU was only able to muster one touchdown and 13 total points at home. In the Rocky Long era, the Aztecs were 50-1 when holding their opponent to 17 points or less prior to Saturday night.
