RENO, NV – For the first time in his career, junior right-handed pitcher Grant Ford has been named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week after leading Nevada to a three-game sweep at San José State. Ford earned one win and a save in relief, tossing 5.2 innings during the week with seven strikeouts and only one hit allowed.
Entering the weekend, the Wolf Pack needed to sweep the Spartans in order to stay in the hunt for the Mountain West Tournament.
Ford helped lead Nevada to a 3-1 week, and picked up his fifth win of the season on Friday, pitching the final 3.1 innings in relief while striking out five Spartans and allowing his only hit of the week. He held opposing batters to a .056 average, and only allowed one earned run in four games.
Pitching in his hometown, Ford pitched 1.2 hitless innings to close out Sunday’s game and pick up his team-high fourth save of the season. With a two-run lead and the bases loaded in the eighth inning, Ford only allowed one sacrifice fly to keep the Pack ahead before pitching a perfect ninth inning to close out the game.
Ford has been one of the best out of the bullpen for the Pack this season, posting a team-high 26 appearances and a 5-1 record.
Nevada will play its final contest of the regular season tomorrow against Pacific at 6 p.m. at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park. Tickets are available online or by calling (775) 348-PACK.
