RENO, NV (KOLO) - There was no shortage of drama at the final round of the boys' 4A Golf State Championship Tuesday from Somersett Country Club.
It was a Coronado celebration times two, with the Cougars taking both the team and individual titles. The latter came much tougher than the former, with Michael Sarro outlasting Galena's Ian Gilligan in a playoff.
The day started with Sarro and Galena freshman Orlando Coons tied for first. Coons shot three-over par in his final round, dropping the freshman to fifth place overall.
This opened the door for Gilligan, the two-time defending Northern regional champion, to make a move to the top. The sophomore had six birdies on the front nine, eventually taking a one-shot lead into the final hole. Gilligan would bogey, allowing Sarro to force a playoff after his par on 18.
The duo played the final hole over again, with a rough go in the bunker forcing Gilligan into another bogey. This opened it up for Sarro, who sank another birdie to claim the individual championship. Both Sarro and Gilligan were the only players to finish the tournament under par.
As for the team title, the Cougars ran away from the Grizzlies. Coronado finished +7, 10 strokes better than second place Galena.
