COLORADO SPRINGS, Co. – For the second week in a row, junior outside hitter Kayla Afoa has been named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week following her performances at the Nevada Invitational. This is her third Mountain West honor in her career and second defensive honor.
Afoa helped the Pack put together back-to-back tournament sweeps after going 3-0 this past weekend at the Nevada Invitational, with wins over Southern Utah, Gonzaga and California Baptist.
The Honolulu native was named to the All-Tournament team as well as named the MVP. Afoa averaged 3.38 digs per set and put up 20 digs in the Southern Utah matchup. Along with her 44 digs she tallied a solo block and six block assists against the Thunderbirds to bring her block total on the weekend to 13.
Currently, Afoa sits in second on the team in digs with 171, while ranking eighth in conference. Nevada as a squad ranks first in digs in the Mountain West with 793, with New Mexico in second with 644.
The Pack is 10-2 on the season and looking to carry that momentum into Mountain West play. Nevada travels to Fresno, Calif. on Thursday, Sept. 26 for a match with the Bulldogs of Fresno State before returning home to take on San Diego State on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 1 pm PT.
