MONO COUNTY, Calif. (KOLO) - The California Highway Patrol has released the name of a woman killed after her car went over an embankment on Tioga Pass.

The wreckage was discovered Sunday, November 3, 2019 just before 11AM.

The CHP says 19-year-old Kayla Vallez from Stockton was traveling westbound on the pass in a 1997 Honda Accord, and for unknown reasons, went off the road and down the embankment, rolling several times. Vallez was the only one in the car, and was wearing a seatbelt, according to the CHP.

The exact date and time of the crash have not yet been determined.

The CHP says another driver had stopped at a scenic overlook on the south shoulder of the pass, about six miles west of U.S. 395 and saw the car about 400 feet down the embankment.

CHP Bridgeport, Mono County Sheriff’s Office and Mono County Search and Rescue (SAR) all responded. Vallez was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash is under investigation.
