RENO, Nev. (KOLO)-- A woman faces as much as life in prison without a chance for parole when she is sentenced April 9 for a July 28, 2016, murder at the Oxbow Nature Park in west Reno, the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office reported.

Katherine Fletcher, 40, shot Robert Trask once in the upper back. Trask was taken to Renown Regional Medical Center where he died.

A witness heard the gunshot and saw a woman fleeing the scene, pulling a young boy by hand. Police identified Fletcher as the suspect.
Police said the 8-year-old child was the subject of a custody dispute. Fletcher repeatedly made false allegations against Trask to get custody, police said. Police said the child witnessed the shooting.

Fletcher told police she did not know how Trask was shot and that she was not the shooter. The child said Fletcher claimed the shot came from the bushes.

Detectives learned Fletcher bought a pistol in the weeks before the shooting and went target shooting. Police were not able to find the gun.
Fletcher has a conviction for child neglect and for burglary in possession of a firearm.

A jury found Fletcher guilty after a weeklong trial in Washoe District Court.

The child testified at the trial.
