Washoe Sheriff's Office warns of scammers posing as cops

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office warns that scammers are calling, posing as lieutenants to try to get people to pay money to avoid being arrested for warrants that don’t exist.

The fake callers have posed as Lt. Kevin Price or Lt. Mike Bassi. They may claim to be calling for a missed court hearing for civil duty. One call went to a sheriff’s office employee.

“The scammer actually received a call back from Undersheriff Wayne Yarbrough, not the Sheriff's Office employee he was trying to scam,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “Once the scammer heard it was the real Washoe County Sheriff’s Office calling him back, he immediately disconnected.”

The scammer usually asks for a payment to avoid being arrested on a warrant, often asking for a cash card or a pre-paid credit card.

Anyone who has suffered a loss as a result of a scam is encouraged to call the sheriff’s office at 775-328-3001 (option 7), file a report online at

or with a local law enforcement agency.
