Sheriff: Phone scam uses authentic-seeming voice directory

RENO, NV (KOLO)-- The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is warning of a new, more elaborate phone scam.

This time the scammers leave a call-back number and when people call they get a “phone tree” with the correct names and extensions of sheriff’s office personnel. It also includes the name and extension of the scammer.

“These scammers can be difficult to locate because they often use pre-paid phones and are not working within the jurisdiction where the crime occurred,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

In this case, the scammers call and claim to have a warrant for someone. The scammer then gives instructions for making payments, such as using a cash card or a pre-paid credit card.

The sheriff’s office said it will sometimes call and tell people about warrants but it never negotiates payments over the telephone, especially in lieu of being arrested.

Anyone who has suffered a loss due to this scam is encouraged to contact the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office at 775-328-3001 (option 7), or file a report online at WashoeSheriff.com or with their local law enforcement agency.
