Former substitute teacher sentenced for having sex with student
A former substitute teacher with the Washoe County School District has been sentenced to three months in jail and probation for having sex with a student.
Darrell Baldwin II, 41, was sentenced Monday, January 13, 2020 following an investigation that started back in April of 2019, when a school counselor was told about the alleged relationship.
According to court documents, Baldwin met the student who he had had a sexual relationship with while working at Wooster High School. The relationship began during the student's senior year.
The student told investigators that the two talked and texted daily, and that the relationship turned sexual after a Homecoming football game in September of 2018, when she and Baldwin had sex at the Days Inn on S. Virginia Street.
The student also detailed numerous occasions where she would meet up with Baldwin, and told investigators the two had sex so many times she couldn't count.
Investigators say the two celebrated anniversary-like dates, and exchanged gifts during the holidays, with Baldwin buying the girl a diamond ring.
According to court documents, phone records for the girl showed 6,000 phone calls and text messages between the girl and Baldwin.
Baldwin turned himself in to authorities on May 9, 2019 and was booked into the Washoe County Jail.
The Washoe County School District says Baldwin had worked as a substitute since March 2016. The
shows he has also worked as an assistant football coach.
”Upon being notified of the investigation, WCSD took immediate action to prevent this individual from substituting at any school in the Washoe County School District,” the school district said in a statement. “The safety and security of our students and staff is always our highest priority. This is still an open investigation and the school district will work with the Reno Police Department to help any victim involved.”
In addition to jail time, Baldwin faces two to five years in prison if he violates his probation. He will also be on lifetime supervision, and must register as a sex offender.
