SPARKS, Nev. (KOLO) - The Washoe County Human Services Agency Senior Services Division, Regional Parks and Open Space, and Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada have opened a new meal site for seniors.

The new site will serve seniors 60 and older meals prepared by Catholic Charities at the Washoe County Senior Center. The Spanish Springs meal site is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition to having a meal, seniors can socialize, play board and card games and enjoy occasional live entertainment.

"This is going to be great to come down here and socialize and actually see some real human beings and not just watch TV. It's going to be great," Harold Pershall, a senior, says.

Seniors 60 and older are provided meals with a suggested voluntary donation of $2. A $4 donation is required for individuals under the age of 60.

Meals served at the new Spanish Springs Congregate Meal Site are part of the Senior Nutrition Program, which serves more than 400,000 meals to seniors throughout Washoe County every year.

"I am excited that Washoe County Senior Services is opening a meal site for a growing senior population in Spanish Springs," says Washoe County Commissioner Vaughn Hartung (Dist. 4). "We value our seniors and this will be a great place for them to gather, enjoy a healthy meal and experience the exceptional services Washoe County offers. Serving our seniors where they are is one of the many ways Washoe County supports the Commission's strategic objective in providing a safe, secure and healthy community."

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the new facility December 4, 2018. It's at 7100 Pyramid Way in Sparks, near the library.

The Spanish Springs Congregate Meal Site is Washoe County's eleventh senior meal site.
