Washoe County School District wants input on new high school name

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - The Washoe County School Naming Committee is asking for input on the future high school to be built at Wildcreek and the future Career & Technical Academy to be located on what is now Procter R. Hug High School.

The District survey asks whether the Hug name should remain at the existing campus or if it should go to the new high school. Alternatively, both campuses could be given new names.

Because the two projects are linked, the Board of Trustees has directed the Committee to consider the names for the two campuses at the same time.

The new high school at Wildcreek is anticipated to be open by the 2022 school year.

The District survey is available in both English and Spanish.

According to a WCSD website, "Procter Hug, for whom this school was named, was a teacher and coach at Sparks High School from 1927-1932 and was vice principal from 1932-1937. He became Superintendent of Sparks schools from 1937-1956 and became Assistant Superintendent of Washoe County School District in 1956. He served as Superintendent of Washoe County Schools from 1959-1966. In 1966 he was elected to the State Senate. For 38 years he was an outstanding Nevada educator and dedicated his career to public service."

Hug High School sports teams are known as the Hug Hawks.
