Washoe County Health District offering free flu shots

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - The Washoe County Health District (WCHD) will give out 600 free flu shots Wednesday. It’s part of the Family Health Festival at North Valleys High School.

WCHD workers will take this opportunity to prepare for massive emergencies. WCHD said around 40 workers will use this flu clinic to practice dispensing medications in the event of a community emergency.

Health officials aren’t just encouraging people to get their flu shot for health purposes, but to help the district with this training opportunity.

WCHD Christina Conti said, “The more people that come through to get their flu shot, the better it is for us in our practicing, because we really need to surge our capabilities, it doesn’t help us when we get a hundred people because they trickle through.”

Conti continued, “We get that big surge of personnel coming through so that we can see what we can do to manage any changes we can make. So we really need our community to come through and get their free flu shot for us.”

Multiple agencies like NV Energy will also be at the event and offer other resources too.

The event runs from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 pm. at the school’s cafeteria.
