WCSD holds community conversation meetings with interim superintendent

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) Members of the community attended the Washoe County School District's first Community Conversation meeting to ask questions and provide feedback to Interim Superintendent Kristen McNeill.

"And that's really what these meetings are, you know I've been in this district for almost a quarter of a century, 25 years as a teacher and a principal and other positions and so it's really just meeting the interim superintendent and being comfortable with what's going on in our school district," McNeill says.

McNeill discussed her Pathway to Positive Progress plan, which provides a road map for the coming weeks and months of work in the district.

Some parents are still weary of the district's plans moving forward.

"One of the downsides of Nevada is that education is undervalued," Alrica Goldstein, a parent of two students, says.

Goldstein says she's worried about the district's budget and that some of the program's her kids are in will potentially be cut.

"Last year the Gate Institute (Gifted & Talented Education Programs) was threatened to be cancelled and for my kids it's a really important aspect of why we're here in the Washoe County School District," she says.

Multiple parents came forward about their kids not being able to use the restroom during school because of vaping.

"He just felt like he couldn't breathe in there, so he's particular about things like that and he would just hold it," Goldstein says.

McNeill says that none of these issues are a surprise and the district is working to find solutions.

"We know vaping is a concern in our schools we need to get the message out there how dangerous vaping is to our students but then the budget and we've got a meeting scheduled with our board of trustees," McNeill says.
