RENO, Nev. (KOLO) -- The Washoe County School District (WCSD) is asking parents, families, students, and community members to participate in the Zoning Advisory Committee meeting on Thursday, February 20, 2020. The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at Silver Lake Elementary School, located at 8719 Red Baron Boulevard in Reno.

The Zoning Advisory Committee will be discussing school attendance zoning for the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 school years. As WCSD is preparing to open more schools, the District is changing school zoning boundaries in several neighborhoods for the 2021-2022 school year to relieve overcrowding and growing numbers of students. Also, the District is planning for school zoning boundaries that will be impacted when the new Procter Hug High School opens in August 2022.

At the meeting, the committee will be discussing a new elementary school being built in the Cold Springs area and potential zoning changes that may impact:

  • Desert Heights Elementary School

  • Gomes Elementary School

  • Silver Lake Elementary School

  • Stead Elementary School

  • Lemmon Valley Elementary School

  • Cold Springs Middle School

  • O’Brien STEM Academy

Also, the committee members will discuss the anticipated work and timeline for additional elementary school and high school rezoning needs in the future.

The committee will be discussing and could make recommendations regarding the new Procter Hug High School being built in the Wildcreek area, which is scheduled to open in August 2022. The potential zoning boundaries could affect the Spanish Springs High School and current Procter Hug High School zoning boundaries.

For those who are unable to attend the meeting, questions or comments may be submitted online to zoning@washoeschools.net.
