RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - APRIL 28, UPDATE: The Washoe County School District Board of Trustees has voted to appoint Dr. Kristen McNeill as school district superintendent.
Dr. Kristen McNeill appointed WCSD superintendent in a six to one vote.
Trustees voted in favor six to one during the board's regular meeting held virtually on Tuesday, April 28, with Trustee Jacqueline Calvert as the only 'no' vote.
The trustees referenced what they called "overwhelmingly positive comments" received via email in favor of appointing McNeill. To view the comments, click here.
Trustee Andrew Caudill said, "It's the best decision for our school district." He identified two main points among those in the community who opposed appointing Dr. McNeill, including wanting the district to complete the search, and calling the decision a "panic move."
Trustee Katy Simon Holland said Dr. McNeill has served the students, staff and families in the community well. She also pointed out that if the district were to complete the search, and none of the candidates were selected, the district wouldn't have any candidates available until fall of 2021. Simon Holland said it wouldn't be fair to keep students and the interim superintendent in limbo for that amount of time.
Vice President Angie Taylor also voted in favor and said McNeill is the best candidate to move the district forward.
Trustee President Malena Raymond assured the community the decision to appoint Dr. McNeill has nothing to do with the COVID-19 crisis, but with Dr. McNeill's leadership.
McNeill spoke during the zoom meeting after learning about the decision. "I am truly, truly grateful for your decision today."
"I can't wait for tomorrow and what it's going to bring us," McNeill said, "because we're going to be there all together."
The decision is effective immediately.

In the interim, the district will hold a virtual town hall meeting where members of the public will be encouraged to offer their input.
