Volunteers of America collecting backpacks for children

RENO, NV (KOLO) - School is just around the corner and Volunteers of America (VOA) needs your help. The organization is collecting backpacks full of school supplies to give to children in need.

VOA's Operation Backpack hopes to outdo last year’s number of 800 backpacks. The organization said the need for donations is greater than ever.

“We are seeing a lot more of people in our community that are struggling, just trying to make ends meet,” said Linda Grace with VOA.

She added, “We are in the middle of a housing crisis, and families are going to have to make hard decisions.”

Grace continued, “The added cost of purchasing school supplies for their children, they have to buy new shoes, new clothes and the cost of the backpack and all the supplies that go with that, it really can take a toll on a family.”

The school supplies and backpacks will provide local youth tools they need to achieve academic success.

Donations will be accepted at the VOA building and four Keva Juice locations in Reno, Sparks, and Carson City. The store will have boxes out for people to drop off donations.

The last day to donate is Friday. VOA will distribute the backpacks next week.
