Ask most Northern Nevada nonprofits and leaders would likely say, they are only as good as their volunteers. They work for free to boost and maintain the wellness of a charity.

In Minden,

is no different, and with the intense care needed for the therapy horses and the adults and children with disabilities, extra hands are always welcome.

“The horses always have love for you no matter what,” explains Debbie Ballew, and that is easily one of the top reasons she volunteers at Kids and Horses, adding, “I started out as a side-walker, next to the kids and helping make sure that they were safe. And as they saw I had experience with the horses, I am now a leader.”

On the campus, you'll see large and beautiful horses, providing the gentlest sense of patience and tranquility with clients and they help both kids and adults gain confidence and strength.

"Actually my husband saw a program on Channel 8 and then I looked them up, exactly where they were and came out and met everybody and fell in love with the facility, like you said, it's a beautiful facility, very well organized and very well taken care of,” Ballew tells us.

She grew up on a ranch in Wyoming, later in life purchased land in Spanish Springs and bought 3 horses. The nonprofit sits on six acres and helps dozens of clients with disabilities, so there is a great need for more help.

“Even if you don't have a lot of experience with horses, there is always a lot to do out here. They're wonderful teachers so you can learn about the horses and everything. Just take the time to come out and fall in love with it all."

"Almost every horse that I have been around... it's like they want to protect that child, they want to take care of that child. They feel when they are tense, so they take care of that. It's almost like their relaxed feeling goes through the child and relaxes the child," Ballew explains.

Quality time with horses, helping people and filling your soul. It's definitely worth your time to consider giving back.
