RENO, Nev. (KOLO) United Blood Services says it's the blood on the shelves that saves lives. The center in Reno is in need of donations this holiday season.
"This time of year it's really important for us to get blood donations because we can get lost on people's schedules," Scott Edward, communications director, says.
Edward says they get about 150 blood donations each day. Edward says the donations help save lives, like that of Madeleine Iroz, a cancer survivor who received blood transfusions for treatment.
"Without blood transfusions, I don't know what I would have done," Iroz says.
Now 21 and cancer-free, Iroz says the treatments were life-saving for her.
"To be able to receive blood from somebody who took the time to put someone else's needs in front of their own to get treatment," Iroz says. "That's just a heart-warming thought to have and I'm really thankful for that."
United Blood Services in Reno will hold a 'Christmas to Remember' blood donation drive December 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
