RENO, Nev. (KOLO)-- The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine celebrates its 50th anniversary March 25, 2019, and March 16, there was a sold-out Golden Gala at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa.
More than 450 attended the celebration. In the 50 years, the med school has trained more than 3,500 physicians, about 40 percent of whom practice in Nevada, the school said in a statement.
Dr. Thomas L. Schwenk, the medical school dean, gave opening remarks. Other speakers included Nevada U.S. Sent Catherine Cortez Masto, Professor Thomas Kozel of the medical school’s Department of Microbiology and Immunology, who has been on the school faculty since 1971, Dr. Darryll Patterson, interim chairman of the UNR Med’s Department of Internal Medicine, and Misha Fotoohi, president of the UNR Med Class of 2020.
Kozel gave a historical perspective of the medical school’s history.
“Celebrating our golden anniversary is a significant and special milestone for UNR Med,” Schwenk said in a statement from the medical school. “We're excited, humbled and energized to share not only our historic achievements, but the many innovative developments underway that will transform medical education and health care in northern Nevada, with the community. We’re most grateful to our alumni, health care partners and our donors who have graciously supported the school over these five decades.”
Last May, the school embarked on a year-long, community-wide celebration themed “Unrivaled history. Unlimited future.” It concludes at the medical school’s Hooding Ceremony in May 2019.
