Record-breaking snowfall this year had thousands crowding Squaw Valley to kick off the resort’s Freedom Fest.

Squaw Valley Public Relations Representative Alex Spychalsky said the resort received nearly 60 feet of snow this year. Spychalsky said this year was the third snowiest season on record.

Spychalsky said, “Tons of snow and you can still see, we are skiing on the remnants of the snow. Some people think that we make the snow in the spring and in the summer to keep it going.”

She added, “But we haven’t man-made any snow here since January. So this is all snow that we’re still skiing on that’s natural that we received this winter.”

In the entire history of Squaw Valley it’s only been open six times on July 4th. Families and friends were all decked out in red, white, and blue.

Freedom Fest is until Saturday; the last day to ski at Squaw Valley is Sunday.
