CARSON CITY, Nev. (KOLO) - Social Worker Nicholas Basalyga is riding across the country to raise money for a non-profit he started in Philadelphia to help others beat addiction. It's called In the Saddle.
"Our mission is to build a fellowship of recovering individuals through cycling, community service and group support," Basalyga said. "The idea is to add additional support to individuals in early recovery from drugs and alcohol."
He left San Francisco July 29, 2016 and came through Carson City August 4. The journey is a personal one.
"I've been in recovery for over six years myself and cycling has been a big part of my recovery; that's how In the Saddle got started," he said. "I'm a social worker by trade and thought about how through this program we can do something unique and add support to an individual's recovery."
He says he's already seeing a lot of support for the ride.
"People can go to our website www.inthesaddlephilly.org and they can sponsor miles of the tour, they can join the tour and ride along with me or they can sponsor a stage of the tour," Basalyga said. "Support has been awesome so far. This is a subject that really connects personally to a lot of people."
So far he's traveling solo. But the journey has just begun.
"I have this grand vision," he said "I shaved before I got to San Francisco and maybe there's a sober Forrest Gump on bikes by the time I get back to Philadelphia."
