RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - The Reno Police Department had heavily armed officers sweep Meadowood Mall Friday night after a report that a man threatened to commit violence inside.

Around 10:30 p.m. December 22, 2017, they found the man outside Toys R Us across McCarran Boulevard from the mall, Lt. Scott Shaw said.

He was taken into custody and police are having him undergo a psychiatric evaluation. He was not arrested.

Police did not find a weapon on the man.

When police could not find the man after sweeping the mall, they posted officers there and continued to search. It does not appear the public was at risk.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we are looking for a male subject in his 50s,” Shaw said.

There were 18 officers at the height of the call and eight remained Friday night, Shaw said.

A police officer was on patrol when two people in their late teens told him about 7:54 p.m. that a man said he was going into the mall to commit violence, Shaw said. The man wore baggy clothes and it appeared that he may have had a weapon hidden in the clothes but the people saw no specific weapon.

Police found what appears to be clothing that the man was wearing discarded in the mall.

A Meadowood Mall spokeswoman referred questions to Reno Police.
