Reno-Sparks hospitals hold emergency drill

RENO, NV (KOLO) - Three hospitals in Reno and Sparks held a drill Thursday to prepare for a public health or health care emergency in Washoe County.

The Inter-Hospital Coordinating Council (IHCC) Alternate Care Site Exercise took place May 2, 2019 at Renown Regional Medical Center, St. Mary's Regional Medical Center and Northern Nevada Medical Center.

Hospitals say the drill was designed to operate within the Washoe County Alternate Care Site Plan and IHCC Preparedness Planning Guidelines, which "establish the emergency response framework and guides the IHCC in preparation to protect the health, safety, and well-being of Washoe County residents and visitors in areas impacted by a natural or manmade health emergency or disaster."

The drill was to test hospitals' ability to respond to a catastrophic earthquake resulting in a mass evacuation of residents, causing a long-term hospital surge in the Reno-Sparks area.
