Reno approves survey for Waste Management customers

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) -- The City of Reno will launch a periodic review to get feedback from the public about the job Waste Management is doing.

The Reno City Council unanimously approved the motion March 28, 2018. The council asked staff to hire a consultant to conduct a scientifically valid customer survey of residential and commercial solid waste and recycling customers.

This comes after numerous Reno businesses were fined by the city of Reno for using companies other than Waste Management for their recycling services.

The businesses fined say the agreement allows them to use other companies for recycling.

"There are all types of options that are on the table; I just don't want to see us end up in court. I don't want to spend another dime in litigation. I want us to spend time gathering data, make decisions informed on data and meet with our provider and come up with a go-forward plan," said Councilwoman Naomi Duerr, who represents Ward 2.

The survey is expected to cost $15,000.

The council plans to bring the topic of recycling service and business competition at a later meeting.
