SPARKS, NV (KOLO) “To be completely honest I was a little disappointed I wasn't top 5 or valedictorian,” says Angel Barboza, a Reed High Senior, selected as one of Washoe County School District’s outstanding seniors of 2019. “When I came into high school I was first in class my freshman year. It was like yes, I'm going to be valedictorian. I'm going to be the best," he says
That didn't happen to Angel Barboza. But it’s not for lack of trying, talent, or tenacity. He has a grade point average of 5.002.
Take a listen to the classes he's taken over the last four years, and you'll understand why the GPA is so high.
“Honors English, honors Algebra, honors Spanish, for Spanish speakers, honors trig, honors chemistry. I've taken 11 AP classes so far. I started with AP psychology, AP U.S. History, AP Lit, AP Spanish Lit. AP Calculus, AP Stats, AP Physics, I'm missing 3.” he says.
I tell him that’s okay. But he's not all brains. He was a safety on the Raiders football team, and lettered in that sport as well as track.
“I'm going to state in the 4-by-100 relay, and the 4-by-200 relay,” he says.
But wait; there's more. He was on the school's "We the People" debate team. He was senior prom king. He played King Triton in this year's school play. He also shaved his head at a class assembly for St. Baldrick's Day, and in honor of his cousin, who survived cancer.
“Oh Angel, he talked a lot,” says Michelle Matherly. Angel selected Matherly as his most inspirational teacher. She taught him his sophomore year during AP English.
“That Sophomore year, he was one of those kids where, effortless it seemed to be,” says Matherly.
Angel credits his family for keeping him on the right track. School he says was the most important thing above all else.
“My mom wouldn't let me play soccer one year because I had a B the previous year,” he says.
Angel will be the first in his family to attend college. He's headed to UNR this fall, in biochemistry and eventually hopes to go to medical school to be an orthopedic surgeon. We have no doubt he'll succeed at setting things straight.
