SPARKS, Nev. (KOLO) Going to the dentist is something that few people really enjoy doing, but it’s no longer just your teeth you need to be thinking about when you do.
Megan Dinh has recently opened up a new dental office off Galleria Parkway in Sparks.
“More than 80% of Americans suffer from some sort of gum disease,” said Dr. Megan Dinh of Embrace Dental . “So with our diets it's more likely to increase your risk of a heart attack.”
Dinh recently opened up a new office in the Spanish Springs area, and she told us about the new concerns dentists are telling their patients, as studies have shown that an improvement in gum health slows plaque accumulation in the arteries.
“Heart disease is probably the number one factor, mainly because everything is connected in the blood stream so bacteria will travel from the gums down to the body,” Dinh added. “It can cause inflammation of the heart.”
Dinh adds that there are warning signs to look out for.
“Bleeding gums is the number one sign of gum disease. Bad breath is another indicator, because the bacteria is releasing toxins,” she explained.
Dan Healey was one of the first patients at the new office, and says learning about these health concerns has been eye opening.
“I just thought brushing and flossing would do it,” he said. “But now that I know that information it’s something I am definitely going to do every time.”
Embrace Dental is located on Galleria Parkway in sparks.
