Police identify man arrested after Smithridge Apartments standoff

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - Update:
The Reno Police Department has identified the man arrested at the Smithridge Apartments Thursday afternoon after a standoff as Juan Mena, 24.

A Regional Gang Unit detective saw Mena in the 800 block of Gentry Way about 12:10 p.m. and knew he had a warrant for his arrest, police said. The detective followed Mena to the area of Smithridge Drive and Filbert Road, where police say Mena ran from a vehicle and into a home.

Police and personnel from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office and the Washoe County School District Police surrounded the home and negotiators got Mena to surrender peacefully.

Reno Police put a man in handcuffs after a warrant search for a person at the Smithridge Apartments off Peckham Lane in Reno.

Police say no streets were closed, but there were brief precautionary code yellow lockdowns at Pine Middle and Smithridge Elementary schools during the operation early the afternoon of March 8, 2018.

Police say they were looking for one person on a warrant charge and tried to pull him over in traffic, but when he stopped his car, he ran into his apartment, leading to a standoff with officers.

There is no information yet regarding his name or what charges might be.
