Name released of pilot killed in Stead plane crash

The Washoe County Medical Examiner's Office has released the name of a Reno man found dead after a single-engine plane crash at the Reno Stead Airport Monday evening.

80-year-old John Gano Parker was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of his death has not been determined.

According to the Associated Press, Parker founded American Air Racing and was a participant in the Reno Air Races for more than 40 years. He won his first Reno title in 1977 with his plane Top Turkey.

First responders say they found the plane flipped over in gravel at the end of runway 1432 about 7:45PM May 1, 2018.

The NTSB and FAA are investigating the crash. The Reno Stead Airport will remain operational during the the investigation.
