TRUCKEE, Calif. (KOLO) - The Placer County Sheriff's Office is investigating human remains found in a wooded area near Truckee and Highway 89.
A hiker found the remains September 16, 2018. Placer County investigators say the skull appeared to have been exposed to the elements for a "lengthy period of time." A search of the area by detectives and Search & Rescue turned up several additional bone fragments that may also be human.
A campsite described by investigators as "weathered and apparently old" was found near the remains. According to a release, "Although the remains and the campsite appear to both have been exposed to the elements for a lengthy period of time, detectives and coroner investigators are still working to establish a connection between the two."
The Placer County Coroner’s office is conducting additional follow-up to try to identify the remains. Cause and manner of death have not been determined.
