Paul Mitchell The School Reno will start nail technician program in January

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) Paul Mitchell The School Reno will start offering licensing classes for nail technicians starting early 2017. There's a growing demand for the specialty.

"I've seen the greatest need for nail technicians recently than I ever have in my 16 years of experience," said Douglas Christensen, owner of Paul Mitchell The School Reno. "We've had a lot of calls from local salons that need nail technicians and we didn't have a program designed for that so we decided to add that, especially with the other schools going out of business."

The school took on more than 70 students from two other northern Nevada cosmetology schools that closed their doors in recent months. The Paul Mitchell school has reconfigured its space to accommodate the new program.

"We've moved some stations out, bought some new furniture and created a whole new area that is going to be a spa-like experience for nails," Christensen said. "The great thing about a nail program is it's a shorter program, 600 hours, as opposed to 1600 hours."

That means the nail technician course, if taken full-time, can be completed in about four months. The training involves plenty of opportunities for real-world clients who can go in for manicures or pedicures.

"Everybody's scared when they start," Christensen said. "When you're working with the general public you're very nervous about messing up or not doing everything the correct way, but when you go to a school that really sets you up to be a professional, you really have that confidence of going into this knowing you are a professional."

The first class will accept up to 35 students and starts in January.

"We continue to grow and expand and we feel lucky, very supported by the Reno Community," Christensen said.
