CARSON CITY, Nev. (KOLO) - Overnight lane closures will take place next week at the intersection of Kietzke Lane and Mill Street for storm drain installation as part of a Nevada Department of Transportation project to add designated bicycle lanes and upgrade sidewalks on Kietzke Lane.
Vehicles will not be able to travel westbound on Mill Street through the Kietzke Lane intersection during overnight hours of 7 p.m.- 6 a.m. starting the evening of Monday, April 15 through the morning of Friday, April 19. A marked detour will be available via East Second Street and Kirman Avenue. While other directions of traffic will be able to travel through the intersection, periodic lane reductions and traffic shifts will also take place.
Intermittent single lane, shoulder and sidewalk closures and minor traffic lane switches will also continue on Kietzke Lane between Mill Street and Galletti Way through July. Business access will remain available throughout construction.
The lane closures are part of a project to resurface and restripe Kietzke Lane, with slightly-realigned travel lanes to allow for designated bicycle lanes on both sides of the roadway. Existing sidewalks will be upgraded and new sidewalks and ramps installed where they currently do not exist.
Other safety and accessibility improvements will also be made, including a pedestrian-activated flashing crossing sign at Prosperity Street and Kietzke Lane, allowing pedestrians to activate the signs to help stop traffic before crossing the street. Roadway drainage will also be enhanced.
NDOT says the approximately $3 million in improvements by contractor Granite Construction Company will enhance safety and mobility for the more than 20,000 drivers and pedestrians who travel the road each day.
The road enhancements are part of an NDOT Safety Management Plan.
