RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - On December 14, 2016, in federal court in Reno, Judge Miranda Du heard arguments on whether to release the name of an anonymous informant in this case.
The informant was able to provide federal investigators with enough information to indict Dr. Robert Rand, Richard West, and seven other defendants.
The group was arrested in late April of 2016 at the car dealership.
Search warrants and property were taken from the West’s home.
Dr. Rand was arrested in San Francisco returning to Reno from vacation one day later.
The motions filed by all defendants asked the judge to release the name of the informant.
Attorney for West, Michael Kennedy told the judge, the informant did not name west nor the seven other defendants when asked several times who was involved in the drug ring.
Dr. Rand’s attorney said the informant told investigators Dr. Rand ran a backdoor operation prescribing opioids inappropriately.
Dr. Rand needs the name he said because the informant could be a disgruntled friend, employee, or patient.
Judge Du granted Rand’s request.
