LONE PINE, Calif. (KOLO)-- One person died Thursday afternoon in a crash on U.S. 395 involving a sedan and tractor-trailer rig in Inyo County, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The crash happened about 2 p.m. on U.S. 395 in the Coso Road Rest Area about 40 miles south of Lone Pine, Calif.

The CHP said Robert Frost, 78, of Green Valley, Ariz., was driving a 2016 Nissan Versa west on Gill Station Coso Road while John Stiegler, 37, of Ridgecrest, Calif., was driving a 2014 International semi north on U.S. 395 at about 55 mph. Frost entered the intersection without yielding and the semi hit the left side of the Nissan, making it roll into the center divider of U.S. 395.

Frost was flown to a Bakersfield, Calif., hospital. An 88-year-old woman from Sahurita, Ariz., who was a passenger in his car died at the scene, the CHP said. Stiegler was not injured.

The CHP has the case under investigation.
