SPARKS, Nev. (KOLO) In less than two months, The Nugget Event Center will be complete and ready for showtime.
"We're getting close to the end; we're getting ready to finish the canopy and stage for our production and next week we'll be laying in some asphalt and concrete and then bringing in the seating," Mark Sterbens of The Nugget says.
The more than 8,500-seat concert venue is on the corner of Victorian Avenue and 10th Street in Sparks.
This is Sterbens' second time overseeing a project like this in the Silver State.
"The owner of Marnell Gaming did a similar project in Laughlin and it really uplifted the market here and we feel we're on track to do the same thing here so we're really excited and can't wait to bring some great entertainment to the city of Sparks and the whole Northern Nevada area," he says.
Sterbens says this would not have been possible without the collaboration and support of the city of Sparks, which chipped in $1.3 million to the project.
"So if you go back and look at their goals are for that particular fund we reach about 95% of those goals with this venue," he says. That money came from the lodging tax and was approved earlier this year.
With such a large venue, one concern is parking, but Sterbens says they have a plan.
"There is ample parking for what we are permitted to do here, but it is not intended for the density that we will have, so we are definitely looking for some offsite opportunities, so we will be encouraging people to taxi, Uber and take shuttles as well," he says.
The Nugget is hosting a job fair to hire for about 150 positions for the new venue May 1.
