The new Northern Nevada Veterans Home is receiving $33.5 million dollars from the federal government. Construction on the 102,000 square-foot facility is expected to be completed in December 2018.

"We received notification of early reimbursement of over $30 million in federal funds to pay the lions share of our new Northern Nevada Veterans home," says Kat Miller, Nevada State Director of Veterans Services.

Miller says she knew the state would be getting reimbursed but they didn't expect that the money would come this soon.

"Receiving this early reimbursement allows us to put that money to other critical use here in Nevada," Miller says.

The facility will include 96 rooms for veterans as well as supportive services found in a skilled nursing setting.

The need for a home like this in Northern Nevada is high. Right now, many veterans have to travel hundreds of miles for treatment and when this facility opens they can stay close to friends and family.

"Without the leadership and support of our governor and state legislature both federal and state and the determination of veterans across the state, I don't think this project ever would have been built so today is a very happy day for us," Miller says.
