Nevada's first Meadery opens in Brewery District

RENO, NV (KOLO) The first meadery in the state of Nevada has opened in downtown Reno.

"We're excited to be the first one. That's always a great bragging right to have," said Co-owner Jake Conway.

Black Rabbit Mead is one of the newer businesses in the burgeoning Brewery District on East Fourth Street. They specialize in mead, currently offering four different varieties.

"It's a whole new type of alcohol in a sense, even though actually it's the world's oldest alcohol," said Co-owner Will Truce. "But it's coming back with a vengeance right now."

Fifteen years ago, there were only about twelve meaderies in the entire country. Now there's almost seven hundred.

"We've come a long way, not only educating ourselves, but educating the public about what mead is and all of the fun things you can do with it," added Truce.

Education comes naturally to the two long-time friends, who were both teachers at a Charter school in Carson City. They'd never really heard of mead back then, until they were approached by the owner of Al Bees about six years ago, who had crystallized honey that he couldn't sell. They decided to try and make mead with it for fun, and were hooked, developing their techniques and flavors over the years until it was ripe for a business venture.

"People who have tried it are like, oh yeah my uncle made this once down in his basement. Or I have a friend who's made a couple of batches. And they're like, this is much better than that," admitted Conway.

That's because their mead is easier to drink, with completely different flavors. From Pineapple-Jalapeno to Raspberry, and another that's similar to a smooth IPA.

"It's going to come across as something between beer and cider," said Truce. "So it's going to be carbonated, it's going to be about seven percent alcohol. It's going to use all local honey. Of course it's gluten free."

Black Rabbit Mead is under a soft opening right now, open 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays and 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays. Their Grand Opening is scheduled for July 27th. They will also be open on July 18th for the "Art on 4th" Artown Block Party.

Black Rabbit Mead is located at 401 East Fourth Street in Reno.
