CARSON CITY, Nev.(AP) - Nevada lawmakers have been told that about 90 percent of jail detainees statewide are held in just two facilities -- the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas and the Washoe County jail in Reno.
The Nevada Appeal reports that a panel of lawmakers studying rules for pretrial release of criminal defendants learned Tuesday that about three-quarters of jail detainees nationally are held because they can’t afford bail pending trial.
A state official told the panel that keeping people jailed solely because they can't raise bail money violates their 14th Amendment right to due process.
