RENO, Nev. (KOLO) High winds and snow on the way have NDOT on high alert, but they say they've been ready to go for months.
"Now that our first major storm is approaching, we are ready," Meg Ragonese of NDOT says.
She says the top priority is to make sure roads are safe for drivers.
"We stockpile sand on winter roads and prepare our equipment and otherwise just get our roadways ready for winter weather," she says.
NDOT says drivers should give themselves extra time to travel, take it slow on icy winter roads and give extra space between vehicles.
They also suggest having an emergency winter kit in your car at all times. The kit should include tire chains, extra clothes, non-perishable food and water, just in case.
