Man shot by police identified, charged with attempted murder

RENO, NV (KOLO)-- A man shot March 20 after a confrontation with Reno Police Department officers in south Reno has been identified as Ronald George Akers, 42.

Akers was shot once in the torso and hospitalized, then was booked into the Washoe County jail May 14, 2019 on a charge of attempted murder with a deadly weapon, battery on a protected person, battery with a deadly weapon and obstructing and resisting with a deadly weapon.

The Sparks Police Department is handling the shooting investigation and made the update.

Police said the investigation shows police went to the 700 block of South Meadows Parkway on a report that Akers was trespassing at a McDonald’s. Police found him in the 9800 block of Double R Boulevard behind the Latitude 39 Apartments. Akers did not cooperate and there was a fight, police said.

The investigation shows Akers got control of the officer’s police baton and hit the officer several times in the head, injuring him. The officer got his gun and fired once, hitting him in the torso.

On March 23, police reported the officer was released from the hospital.
