TRUCKEE, Calif. (KOLO) - The victim of a June assault has died two weeks after the attack.
About 11PM June 18, 2016, Truckee Police responded to reports of a fight in the downtown Commercial Row area. Officers found 39-year-old Jesse Hill of Chico on the ground and unconscious. Witnesses quickly identified a suspect, 24-year-old Bryan Luke Sperlin of Truckee. Sperlin was still in the Commercial Row area and placed under arrest.
Hill was taken by paramedics to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit with serious head injuries as the result of the assault. Sperlin was booked into the Nevada County Jail on two felony assault charges.
Hill remained in the Intensive Care Unit until July 3, when he died due to the injuries. The official cause of his death will be determined by the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s office after a review of medical documents and an autopsy.
The Truckee Police Major Crimes Investigation Team contines to investigate, saying while most witnesses have come forward, police are still looking for any additional witnesses or video.
“This is a case where it is very important for us to speak to anyone who interacted with either the suspect or victim the night of the incident,” said Sergeant Womack with the department’s investigation team. “People may believe that if they did not see the actual assault they have no information to offer, but we are trying to reconstruct the entire evening so any related information is helpful," Sgt. Womack says.
Police believe there are a variety of charges that could apply depending on the completed investigation. “We will continue to collaborate with the District Attorney’s Office and communicate with the victim’s family to find the most appropriate conclusion. Our focus at this point is to continue with a comprehensive and timely investigation that discloses the factual truths about the case,” said Truckee Police Captain Rob Leftwich.
Nevada County Assistant District Attorney Joe Alexander says, “Our office is committed to working with the Truckee Police Department as this investigation continues to unfold. We join Sgt. Womack’s request that members of the public that have information come forward so that we can accurately assess the circumstances surrounding Mr. Hill’s tragic death and proceed accordingly. Our sympathies go out to Mr. Hill’s family.”
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Sgt. Robert Womack at firstname.lastname@example.org or call the Truckee police Department at (530) 550-2323 and ask to speak with a detective.
