CARSON CITY, NV (KOLO) - A family business in Carson City makes a product to protect you and your family after a natural disaster like the one in southern California last Friday when a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit.
Mustang Manufacturing employees taking part in the "Made in Nevada" shout during the video production of this report.
The shaking caused several gas leaks and fires.
A Mustang Manufacturing product called the squeeze tool is crucial for closing broken pipes to prevent them from spewing dangerous natural gas into the air.
"I think it's pretty incredible how my grandpa just came up with the idea and just 40 years later it's still booming and everyone stills wants our stuff," said Mustang Manufacturing Office Assistant Lyndsey Ford.
Ted Melshelmer is her grandfather. As a mechanical engineer from Cal Poly, he made directional underground drilling equipment in southern California at a time when DuPont started using a new pipe for natural gas made from polyethylene. The material is a strong flexible plastic material that doesn't break when it bends.
Ted designed a squeeze tool to clamp broken pipes for a quick and simple repair. Later he moved his business to Nevada, where it operates today at 2401 Lockheed Way in Carson City.
"What do you think about the business? What it's become today? Did you ever think it would become this?" asked KOLO 8 News Now's Noah Bond. "No, not in my wildest dreams," replied Sharson Melsheimer. Her late husband founded Mustang Manufacturing.
The business employs 12 people today and sells 600 to 800 squeeze tools every month.
The smallest squeeze tool is made for a one-half-inch pipe and the largest is made for a 24-inch pipe, which is two feet across.
The managers at Mustang Manufacturing in Carson City say they make the high quality tools to repair gas leaks when they happen.
Mustang Manufacturing is hiring a full time welder. Business is booming. It's working hard just to keep up with all the orders.
