Local mom turns weight loss journey into business

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) Local mom and entrepreneur Alyssa Starr has turned her weight loss journey into a business. It began after Starr had given birth and was at her heaviest weight of 250 pounds. She was suffering from postpartum depression and gestational diabetes, and says that was when she knew she needed to make a change.

"I thought this is no way for me, this is no way for my kids, no, so stop, reset and this is Alyssa remixed," she says.

She began a regular fitness program and meal prepping to get her life back on track. She has now lost 100 pounds, but says the journey is far from over.

"I'm in this because I understand the struggle," she says. "I get that it takes so much to prep and to plan and to clean and feed your family. I understand that. I was there that was me."

She became a walking billboard for her success, and soon people began requesting that she meal-prep for them. Not long after, she quit her corporate job and Mother of Macros was born.

"It was scary! I remember my first customer and I dropped off meal prep and I was, like, great, I made $45 this week. What did I just do?" she says.

It was that leap of faith into the unknown that now has Mother of Macros's meal prepping service catching on like wildfire. Starr says she preps for celebrity fitness instructors out of Los Angels and some players from the NFL's New York Jets. In the coming weeks Mother of Macros plans to ship nationwide.

"I never in a million years thought we would get to this point where on any given day we're hauling out 400 meals a week out to people here in the community," she says.

Starr's testimony is a true example that if you follow your effort, the possibilities are limitless.

"We are a Nevada small business, my daughter is a fifth generation Nevadan, so we take that seriously, and we really just want to show the rest of the country what Nevada is made of and what it means to be Battle Born," she says.
