Lexie's Gift giving free prom attire to local teens

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - Lexie’s Gift is having a Pop-Up Prom Boutique at The Grove today and tomorrow. The nonprofit organization is giving away free dresses, tuxedos, and accessories.

According to Barbie Marcoe with Lexie’s Gift the items are high end, new, or gently used. Marcoe said the goal is to help out as many families and teens who cannot afford to go to prom.

She said, "We've had some kids that are in transition that are kind of going from maybe foster care, or maybe just a bad situation that they don't have control over.”

Marcoe added, “It's been kind of a fun thing, it’s fun for them to forget about daily problems, and get to come in here and go shopping and have someone spoil them rotten for the day."

Marcoe said its helped more than 150 families since the Pop-Up started on Sunday.

“We have had kids cry, we’ve had mom’s cry, it kind of a fun thing. A lot of these kids come in here not thinking they are able to afford to go to prom.”

She added, “When they get in here and they see we actually have fun dresses and things that that they love, they are excited. They know they are coming in for a free dress or free tux, but they don’t what we are going to have until they walk into the door, so they still have a little bit of a surprise when they get here.”

The event is today, January 13 between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and tomorrow, January 14 between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.
