Warming up your car could cost you

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong says starting up your car in frigid temperatures and leaving it unattended is always a bad idea. Furlong says it's never smart to leave your car running unattended.

"Whether it's at your home areas or at your shopping areas, would-be thieves will go right after those cars."

With spikes in car thefts this time of year, Furlong says drivers have two choices.

"Your options are either to have the devices installed by a professional that will secure your car while it warms up or don't do that at all."

He adds if the worst case scenario happens, getting your car back after it was stolen isn't the hardest part.

"More of a temporary interruption, because more often than not, those cars are recovered; but it's difficult for you to recover from that day."

It's up to each person to decide whether they want to take the risk, but remember, idling too long can cost you.
